The Psychological Testing Process: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Colorful puzzle-piece brain symbol representing cognitive processes and psychological assessment.

Psychological testing can feel intimidating, whether you’re seeking answers for yourself, a partner, or a child. While some expect an evaluation to be an impersonal process, our psychological testing is designed to be collaborative, grounding, informative, and genuinely supportive.

At Collective Insight, we provide psychological testing in Chicago for ages 6 and up, including ADHD and autism evaluations, school accommodation assessments, personality testing, and general diagnostic clarification. Our approach is warm, neurodiversity-affirming, and individualized, centered on each person’s lived experience, strengths, and needs.

In this guide, we’ll walk through our process step by step so you know what to expect, how to prepare, and how your results can support your next steps.

Why You Might Consider Psychological Testing

Psychological testing is not only about placing a label. It’s a way to understand strengths and challenges, gain clarity about your experiences, and receive guidance for what comes next. Through conversation, standardized assessments, and observations, testing helps us understand how someone thinks, learns, communicates, and experiences daily life.

People pursue testing for many reasons, including:

  • Exploring a possible diagnosis. You may be wondering whether you or your child meets the criteria for ADHD, autism, anxiety, or mood-related concerns.
  • Exploring neurodiversity. Many women, AFAB individuals, and people from marginalized backgrounds are under-identified and misdiagnosed, especially when their presentation does not match traditional diagnostic expectations.
  • Seeking school or workplace accommodations. Testing can provide documentation needed to access support and accommodations in school or work settings.
  • Clarifying a diagnosis. For those with an existing diagnosis, testing can confirm it, rule out other possibilities, or offer deeper insight into current strengths and challenges.
  • Guiding next steps. Whether it’s therapy, medication management, ADHD/executive functioning coaching, or other supports, testing gives you a roadmap for moving forward.

No matter your reason for seeking testing, our goal is to make the process feel collaborative, affirming, and supportive.

Making Testing Approachable

It’s normal to feel anxious before your first session. Many clients worry:

  • “What if I don’t answer ‘correctly’?”
  • “What if my experience doesn’t really count?”
  • “What if they don’t believe me?”

Psychological testing isn’t something you can pass or fail. It’s simply a way for us to understand you more fully and support you in feeling understood.

We see testing as a collaborative conversation. We’re here to listen to your story, understand your lived experience, and ensure the results reflect you in a meaningful and accurate way.

It’s also common to second-guess your experiences, especially if you haven’t always felt understood in the past, and we hold that with care.

We also recognize that traditional diagnostic frameworks haven’t always reflected the full range of neurodivergent experiences or identities. For example, ADHD and autism can present differently in women, AFAB individuals, adults, and people from marginalized backgrounds, and masking can make identification harder.

Our focus is on understanding each person’s unique presentation and needs, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

Insurance and Cost Transparency

Before your appointment, we’ll gather your insurance information and verify your benefits. Because insurance can feel overwhelming, we review your coverage with you and outline expected costs, if any. We want you to feel informed and prepared so you can focus on the testing experience, not the logistics.

We know planning for testing comes with a lot of questions. Our FAQ page is available if you’d like to review common topics like insurance, appointment length, and preparation.

What to Expect Throughout the Testing Process

1. Intake: Understanding Your Experience

The process starts with a one-hour telehealth intake appointment. During this session, we’ll discuss your:

  • Personal and family history
  • Current concerns and symptoms
  • Academic or occupational challenges
  • Goals for testing

This conversation helps us understand your story and tailor the assessment process to your needs and goals. Depending on the scope of testing, additional intake appointments may be needed.

2. Psychological Testing: Understanding How You Think and Learn

The second step is the in-person and/or virtual testing session(s). Depending on your needs, this appointment may take several hours and can include:

  • Cognitive tasks. Interactive and pencil-and-paper tasks that assess problem-solving, memory, processing speed, and other cognitive abilities.
  • Computer-based assessments. Measures that look at how your attention functions over time, how quickly you respond, impulse control, and how distractions may affect your focus.
  • Questionnaires. Self-report forms and optional informant forms, completed by people who know you well — such as a partner, family member, close friend, teacher, or colleague — help us understand daily functioning and lived experience across settings.
  • Interactive observation. Assessments that help us understand how you communicate, connect, and approach tasks in a way that reflects your natural style and strengths.

Testing isn’t about getting things “right.” It’s designed to help understand how your brain works, how you approach tasks, and what supports may be most helpful.

Many people find parts of the process surprisingly engaging, especially problem-solving and puzzle-based tasks.

You’ll be supported throughout the process by your clinician or our psychometrist. We check in regularly, take breaks whenever they’re needed, and move at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Feedback: Understanding Your Results

Once testing is complete, you’ll meet for a one-hour telehealth feedback session, usually within 2 to 4 weeks. During this appointment, you will:

  • Review your report. Your clinician will prepare a comprehensive and detailed report that summarizes your results. You will receive a copy to keep and can share it with other healthcare providers if you choose.
  • Walk through the findings. Together, you’ll go through your results and discuss what they mean in clear and accessible language.
  • Discuss diagnoses, if applicable. If ADHD, autism, or another concern is identified, your clinician will talk with you about how it relates to your experiences and presentation.
  • Talk through next steps. You’ll receive individualized recommendations tailored to your needs, which may include:
    • Therapy to support emotional well-being
    • Medication management, when appropriate
    • ADHD or executive functioning coaching
    • School or workplace accommodations

Our goal is for you to leave not just with answers, but with clarity, direction, and support for what comes next.

Special Focus: ADHD and Autism Assessments in Chicago

Two of the most common reasons people seek our services are ADHD and autism evaluations.

ADHD Assessment Chicago

ADHD doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some people feel noticeably restless or have trouble staying focused, while others deal more with internal restlessness, mental fatigue, or challenges with executive skills like organization, working memory, task initiation, and time management. ADHD often overlaps with anxiety, depression, or trauma-related responses, which can make it harder to recognize and understand in everyday life.

Our ADHD assessments look at attention, executive functioning, and related thinking skills, while also taking your history and day-to-day experiences into account. By combining standardized tools with your lived experience, we build a clear and individualized picture of how ADHD may be showing up for you. This helps guide next steps, whether that includes therapy, executive functioning coaching, strategies to support daily routines, or a medication consultation when appropriate.

Autism Assessment Chicago

Autism is often underrecognized in individuals whose traits do not align with historically narrow or traditional diagnostic presentations, including women, AFAB individuals, and people from marginalized backgrounds.

Our autism assessments focus on understanding social communication, sensory processing, and behavior patterns without assuming a one-size-fits-all presentation.

Many of our clients are adults exploring autism later in life, after years of feeling different or misunderstood.

When an autism diagnosis fits, it can offer clarity and relief by providing language for your experience and access to support, accommodations, and community.

It can also support deeper self-understanding and validation of the strengths and challenges you’ve carried throughout your life.

What Happens After Testing

Once testing is complete and you’ve reviewed your results with your clinician, you’ll walk away with a clear understanding of your strengths, areas of challenge, and personalized recommendations. You will also be provided an electronic copy of the report following the feedback appointment.

From there, you may choose to continue care with us, which can include:

  • Therapy to support emotional well-being
  • A medication consultation, if appropriate
  • ADHD or executive functioning coaching to build daily strategies and routines
  • Using your report to request school or workplace accommodations

We’re committed to supporting clients across the entire process. Our approach centers on:

  • Neurodiversity-affirming care that respects individual differences
  • Considering lived experience, not just test scores
  • Understanding diverse presentations across genders, ages, and backgrounds
  • Creating a warm, supportive environment where you feel understood and guided

Our goal is for you to feel seen, supported, and equipped with clarity and next steps, rather than left to navigate things on your own.

Final Thoughts: Taking the First Step

If you’re considering psychological testing for ADHD, autism, or general diagnostic clarity, we aim to make the process clear, supportive, and meaningful. From intake to feedback, you’ll work with a team that sees you as a whole person, not just a set of scores.

You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of yourself and guidance for what comes next. If you have questions or would like to explore getting started, we’re here to support you whenever you’re ready.
